Larimar is also known as the Atlantis Stone. Its only occurrence in its blue colors to this day is the Dominican Republic.
The name "Larimar" is composed of the name "Lari" and the word "Mar" for "sea". Larimar became known in 1975. Miguel Mendez, owner of a Larimar mine in the Dominican Republic, invented it and thus made his daughter Larissa's name known worldwide.
Larimar gets its blue color from trace elements such as copper or vanadium. The white bands in Larimar can also be natrolite, while gray spots are calcite. Dark to black inclusions consist of chalcocite (copper glance). The wine-red inclusions consist of hematite.
According to legend, Larimar is said to be connected to the lost paradise. After that, Larimar is said to be the only remaining testimony of the legendary island of Atlantis.
Larimar symbolizes boundlessness. Its colors are those of the endless sky and the vast sea. It has been worn since early history as a protective stone against evil spirits, natural disasters and illnesses. This stone is said to do many things, among other things, Larimar is said to open new ways of thinking and acting and to serve self-realization.
Due to its high calcium content, it is also said to have a strengthening effect on bones and growth. Larimar is a very popular and attractive gemstone, which is used for necklaces, earrings, bracelets, pendants and armbands. It is very valuable because it has now been almost exploited and has thus become very rare.
In mineralogy, Larimar is referred to as Pectolite.
The chemical formula of Larimar: Ca2Na(HSi3O9
